What is that one thing that you do today which will ensure that you never have to face any financial troubles at any stage in your life?
If you do this one thing consistently, you will ensure that not only your financial future, but also that of your next generation is secured.
I believe upskilling yourself is the most important factor to create value in a competitive marketplace.
You can be the most educated person in the world.
You can be the hardest working person in your company.
But you will always be paid as per your skillset and the value you bring to the table.
Your degrees and efforts are secondary if you are unable to bring the desired results that matter to your employer or your business if you are an entreprenuer.
I work in as Sales job. You can say I stumbled into this role.
A marine engineer who makes a living by selling. Who would have thought, right?
But now I cannot imagine doing anything for a living.
It is one of the best professions in the world.
Nobody asks me to complete a set no of hours in a day. Nobody even asks me to come to office.
Infact, my bosses do not like me sitting in the office. I am of no use in the office.
As long as I complete the sales target for the quarter, they hardly care where I work from or how much I work.
I am being paid for the value I bring to the company.
And while it is stressful and hectic to always worry about sales target, I have realized that as long as I put in the desired efforts the outcome will take care of itself.
My efforts include going to certain number of customers in a week, giving them a Sales presentation, understanding their requirement, understanding their financials, offering them a suitable solution that fits their budget and finally following up with them for an order confirmation.
As long as I keep following the process, the sales target takes care of itself.
It has taken almost 12 years to hone my skills. But I do not rest on my laurels. I continue learning about my industry. I continue learning about Sales.
There is always a better way to do things. There is always an efficient way to close a deal.
Each nuance that I learn helps me take my skill a notch higher. So much so that I do not have to worry about asking for a high salary from my employer.
Because I have confidence in my ability that I can deliver at least four times the value that I have been paid. Sometimes as much as five or six times.
And that’s what I mean by upskilling.
During the initial phase of your career, stop worrying about money. Always look for a job that allows you the space to experiment.
Keep experimenting, keep learning, keep upskilling.
Soon you will reach a stage where you do not have to worry about money. Remember the mistress mindset that I was talking about the other day.
When you upskill yourself at such a level, you automatically gain the superpowers to woo money into your account.
So the question to ask yourself is, “What is that one thing I can do today that will take my skill a notch hire?”
Is it joining a course?
Is it reading a book?
Is it watching a movie?
Is it taking an unpaid internship?
